The Benefits of Lactose Free Milk

What is lactose?

Lactose is the main type of sugar in milk and is found in all milk products. In the small bowel a specific enzyme is used to break lactose down, so it can be absorbed into the body.

Why have lactose free milk?

Many people do not have enough of the enzyme that breaks down lactose, so the lactose can't be absorbed. The unabsorbed lactose then moves into the large bowel where it causes discomfort. The most common symptoms are: bloating, stomach pain, cramps, wind, nausea and diarrhoea.

Who can't digest?

In Australia it has been estimated that 1.5 million people can't digest lactose. The inability to digest lactose can develop at any stage of life. It can also occur temporarily after a small bowel infection or surgery. If you experience discomfort after having milk or milk products you may be unable to digest lactose.

Can people who can't digest lactose drink milk?

Yes, Harvey Fresh produces a unique lactose free milk which is perfect for people who can't digest lactose but love milk. The lactose in the milk is already broken down so it can be easily absorbed.

In Australia milk and milk products are the main sources of calcium in the diet. Calcium is important for keeping your bones and teeth h3 and healthy. Two to three glasses of Harvey Fresh Lactose Free Milk each day will provide all the calcium you need. If you are a teenager, pregnant or breastfeeding you will need an additional glass a day.
